Fresh Start (for your computer)

Fresh Start (for your computer)

A lot of people complain about their computers being slow, but why is this?

History lesson time! Before the “naughties” a lot of computers were configured with hard drives for storage. You may say, “but all computers have a hard drive” and you would be kind of correct.

In the mid naughties, something called solid state drives became a big thing. Originally incredibly expensive, the price of these devices quickly came down to competitive levels and quickly began to eat into the hard drive market.

The pricing came down very quickly on solid state (SSD) storage and quickly ended the usual installation of a hard drive in a consumer computer. They are stll useful for big chunks of data you might not need to access really quickly.

Why solid state is better

A hard drive is made out of spinning plates, covered in magnetic material with heads that sweep over them to read your data. They are a mechanical device and can only read as fast as they can spin the plates, or move the heads across the plates.

Solid state storage on the other hand is purely electronic, there are no moving parts and they are only constrained in effect by how fast your computer can process the data they provide. They have a much lower failure rate, are not susceptible to knocks, use very little energy and are ridiculously fast.

I want one!

Chances are if you are rocking a computer from the 2012-2016 period, you will have a hard drive. Replacing this can be done in two ways, we can replicate your drive onto a new solid state drive meaning you get the benefit of faster storage without much hassle. Alternatively, we pull the hard drive out, install the solid state drive and give a fresh installation of Windows or an operating system of your choice.

This is the preferred option as it means the system is completely clear of any old software and fully up to date.

Anything older than about 2012, should really be considered for replacement as technology has moved on an incredible amount since then, and while we can help give it a boost ultimately you should consider replacing (refurbished kit is brilliant value, talk to us to get some options.)

How much?

We offer this on a fixed rate service on the basis that your computer is in otherwise good working order. The price includes a 250GB solid state drive, the labour to replace the drives and generally clear the inside of the computer out, install Windows and bring everything to a working state.

Pricing will shift if you would like other upgrades, or more storage.
